Always There Was Joe
written by C. Carson Parks  II

Lyrics:Verse #1:
Always.  Always there was Joe, but my heart was so unwise.
Though you didn't let it show.  I could see it in your eyes.
Oh, there were times, my dear, that it seemed to me your love was drawing near,
But your thought would always go drifting back again to Joe.
Verse #2:
Though I tried to make you care, still you wished that he was there.
Although I was by your side, it did nothing for my pride.
And though you want me now, I can't help it if my heart has cooled somehow.
It won't risk another go;  you might find another "Joe".
It won't risk another go; you might find another "Joe".

Carson's Remarks:

This was a demo for a songwriter class I taught at Capitol Records (Beechwood Music).  "One of the few tunes that I ever wrote under 'guidelines'.  I had suggested to the class that they pretend that some movie studio was making a musical along the loose plot of 'Gone With the Wind'.  They needed a song to convey the feelings involved with the last scene where Rhett says to Scarlet, ' I tried to win your love, and all you wanted was Ashley.  Now you've decided that he was a jerk, and that I was cool.Unfortunately, my ardor was waned and I don't give a damn anymore.  It might have been a dumb assignment, but I thought I should do one too.  It's not a great song, but doing it was a good exercise for me."
